THE COST OF SLATE ROOF TILES

Slate roofing is made of natural stone, and is a high-quality, durable roofing material. Properly cared for, a slate roof can easily last more than 100 years, giving slate roofs a very high return-on-investment. This is better than asphalt shingles, metal roofing, terracotta roof tiles, and even natural lumber shingles. However, the cost of slate roof tiles and installation can be quite a bit higher than other roofing materials. If you’re interested in learning about how much it would cost to install a slate roof, or to find out the roof restoration cost for an existing roof, keep reading. We’ll discuss the price for roof tiling and re-tiling in Sydney, how much slate typically costs per square foot, and a variety of other topics related to the services we provide at NSW Slate Roofing.

    THE COST OF SLATE TILES

The cost of slate depends on the style and quality of slate you buy. If you buy heritage tiles like Penrhyn slate from Wales, for example, you will pay more than you would for comparable slate from other countries, due to its durability and beautiful, unique appearance. Slate is an expensive roofing material. Just purchasing slate will usually cost you anywhere from $20-$50 per square foot (about $200-$500 per square metre). “Soft” slate is usually less expensive, but does not last as long, while “hard” slate costs more, but will have a longer lifespan. In contrast, artificial slate can cost as little as $5-$10 per square foot, and asphalt shingles usually cost between $2-$4 per square foot. However, slate is worth the investment. It has a number of benefits and lasts much longer than other roofing materials – we’ll discuss these in-depth later on in our article.

THE COST OF NEW SLATE ROOF INSTALLATION

The cost of purchasing slate tiles is only part of the puzzle when it comes to installing a slate roof. Slate roofing is much less common than other roofing types, so it requires specialized labor from roofing companies who are experienced at installing slate. This is one of the biggest costs of a new slate roof. You will have to pay for skilled labor from a licensed, insured, and bonded roofing company, like NSW Slate Roofing. The costs depend on the type of slate you use, the size of your home or business, the angle of the roof, and many other factors. However, the cost is usually somewhere around $30 per square foot – making slate roofing quite a bit more than asphalt shingles, which are usually installed for about $10 per square foot.

THE COST OF SLATE ROOF REPAIR OR RESTORATION

Restoring a slate roof is actually quite inexpensive, compared to installing a new slate roof. This is because natural slate is very durable and long-lived. Most slate roofs can easily last over 100 years without requiring roof restoration. In addition, the cost to replace a slate roof is often lowered quite significantly because existing roofing material can be used, and the existing roof does not have to be replaced entirely. Typically, around 50% of slate roofing tiles remain completely intact, even after more than 100 years. Re-using these existing materials can lower roof restoration cost per square metre dramatically. You can also often reuse existing slate tiles for other purposes. Broken or imperfect tiles, for example, don’t have to be thrown away. They can be used as slate floor tiles. You can use tesselated tiles to create beautiful slate floors, and ensure that you maximize your investment in natural slate shingles.

    WHY CHOOSE SLATE?

Slate is one of the most expensive roofing materials there is, and restoring and installing slate roofs is a costly undertaking. There’s no denying that. But despite this, slate is still a great overall investment. Why?

    • Longevity – A properly-maintained slate roof will not experience any issues for up to 100 years, and most Welsh slate and other high-quality slate tiles offer a 100-year warranty. That means, in the long run, your investment will pay off. Here’s an example. Say you paid $30,000 for a slate roof (500 sq. ft, $30/sq. ft for labor and $30/sq. Ft for tile materials). This roof will last you for the rest of your life – and even for most of your children and grandchildren’s lives! In contrast, you may have to replace an asphalt roof up to 5 or more times in 100 years – which would mean you pay more in the long run!
    • Property value – Not planning on keeping your home for 100 years? Your investment in a slate roof will still pay off. Because it’s so durable and long-lived, slate roofs are very attractive to new home buyers, and can boost the value of your property. You can get a better price for your home, because the buyer will know that they won’t have to worry about replacing the roof for decades to come!
    • Durability – Slate is nonporous, durable, and is extremely resistant to fungus and microbial growth, though it can still grow algae. It requires very little maintenance, and is unlikely to be damaged by high winds and other inclement weather conditions.
