At NSW Slate Roofing, we are specialists in all types of slate roofing projects, including building new roofs and making roof repairs with reclaimed slate roofing. Reclaimed slate is a durable, strong, and reliable roofing material – and it’s environmentally-friendly, too.
IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO USE RECLAIMED SLATE ROOFING?
The answer is “yes!” Slate is an extremely durable material, and if you can find slate roofing tiles that have been removed but are still in good shape, they will make an excellent roofing material for your home.
Some of the finest types of slate, like Welsh Penrhyn slate, can easily last 100 to 200 years when installed on a roof. While individual slates may wear down over time, the majority of slate tiles will remain completely intact and in good condition even after a century – or even two!
This means that if someone removes the slate roof from their home and replaces it with another roofing material, most of those slates are still fully usable for further roofing projects. Most builders will send slate to be refinished and reclaimed by recycling centres, so that it can be used again in the future.
Reclaimed slate is just as durable and strong as “new” slate – since it’s a natural rock, it takes a very long time to deteriorate. As long as the slate tiles are all in good condition, reclaimed slate roofing will function just as well as brand new slates would.
In addition, reclaimed slate is environmentally friendly. By reusing existing slate slate, you can avoid the cost and carbon emissions of cutting, processing, and finishing new slate tiles – as well as the waste of sending the old slate to a landfill.
WHERE CAN I GET RECLAIMED SLATE FOR MY ROOFING PROJECT?
Depending on where you live, you may be able to find a recycled building centre near you. These businesses specialise in gathering reusable building materials – toilets and piping, 2x4s, roofing tiles, siding, you name it – and reselling it for a low price to those who want to reuse the products in their own homes.
Doing a bit of Googling is sure to help you find a provider for reclaimed roofing material like slate, so do some research to find a few recycling centres or used building material providers near you.
In addition, NSW Slate Roofing may be able to help you find reclaimed slate to use for your home, since we are slate specialists and often have slate left over from previous projects, or that has been removed from worn-down slate roofs. Contact us for more information and to see if we can provide Welsh slate roof tiles or other slate tiling products for your job.
